Are there fixed hardware ratios I can apply?

No, not really. The fantastic thing about Swift compared to most other storage systems is that it's almost infinitely configurable. Of course, that can also be a challenge. To come up with a good hardware design, two relatively simple questions should be answered:

  1. What is the main use case(s) for the cluster?
  2. Roughly what is the initial size of the cluster?

Once those two questions are answered, it is much easier to start designing the hardware needed for a specific cluster.
